WTF! 80 Year Old Woman Faces Jail Time... For Feeding Ducks!

We must of solved that poverty problem, global warming and world peace and moved on to more important things!

Claire Butcher, an 80-year-old living outside of Boston, has spent the last 45 years providing bread crumbs, dog food, and other snacks to local water fowl.

But officials in Lynn, Massachusetts finally got fed up and slapped the octogenarian with criminal charges, saying that the influx of birds - and the excrement they left behind - was causing a major problem.

After numerous attempts to stop Ms Butcher from feeding the ducks, officials found her guilty of trespassing as well as ignoring a city ban not to feed the animals.

In 2009, Lynn officials made a deal with Ms Butcher after seeking an injunction, and she agreed to no longer feed the birds.

Officials said she repeatedly ignored that deal, trespassed on city property, and neglected to pay several fines.

Officials and neighbours alike are upset at the mess the birds leave behind at the ponds.

The initial problem started in 2009, when Lynn officials got tired of all the complaints stemming from Ms Butcher’s bird feedings.

Some neighbours complained of feathers
getting stuck on their roofs, and others were upset they couldn’t go on a
stroll around the park without walking in piles of duck droppings.

‘I guess Lynn has nothing else to do besides chase an 80-year-old woman down the street for feeding ducks,’ she said.

Favre's answer was typical of the man. Passive-aggressive, a series of compliments with a bunch of hidden needles inserted, and the amazing ability to always bring the subject back around to himself.

"I'm going to be honest, I was not surprised. The biggest surprise to me would be that he didn't do it sooner. My last year in Green Bay prior to the first game, I made the remark that this was probably the most talented team that I've ever played on. And of course everyone looked up and was like, 'This guy's off his rocker.'

"We were very, very young; take me out of the mix and we were by far the youngest team in the league. But I could see the talent pool across the board was outstanding. Now our season kind of ended up being a reflection of that. We came close, and I think we took a lot of people by surprise, but guys emerged rather quickly. Aaron had a chance…even though the last couple years it's seemed like he's almost a rookie, he's been around awhile. And I'd like to think that he watched, he learned, and then when he got a chance to play, he brought in his ability which is obviously very good or they wouldn't have drafted him in the first round. He's got tremendous talent, he's very bright and he got a chance to watch and see successful teams do it right.

"And so, he just kind of fell into a good situation. On top of that, he's a good player. I don't think there's any pressure on him now, the talent around him is even better than when I was there. So I'm really kind of surprised it took him so long. In the early part of last year season, it hadn't quite clicked yet and I didn't know it would. I just kind of figured when they hit their stride, they're going to be hard to beat. And that's what happened."

The simple fact is that Rodgers is playing the position in a way that Favre may never have — with a ruthless efficiency that Favre rarely possessed. That's not a slam on Favre; the daredevil aspect of his play was one of the many reasons he was one of the NFL's most successful all-time quarterbacks. But it's also true that Favre should take a second look at how Rodgers is marshalling his old team — or, it's possible that Favre has already taken that second look and would prefer that Rodgers not fly so close to the sun.

It just grates a bit that Favre is trying to make the NFL's best quarterback (that's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it) into less than what he is, simply because he's taking Favre's ball and running with it, and throwing it more accurately than Favre himself ever did.

Washington (CNN) -- Actress Daryl Hannah was arrested Tuesday during a sit-in in front of the White House protesting a pipeline expansion project that would significantly increase the amount of oil the United States imports from Canada's controversial Alberta oil sands.

The "Splash" actress was among more than 100 people arrested at the demonstration, according to the group that organized the protest.

A representative for the actress was unaware of the arrest when contacted by CNN Tuesday afternoon.

The State Department is set to issue what could be a final ruling to allow a massive new pipeline expansion from central Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico. A decision is expected by the end of the year, State Department spokeswoman Heide Fulton said at a briefing last month.

Canada's oil sands have drawn numerous critics who say the way the oil is extracted harms the environment.

Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEO

After several years of failing health and medical leaves of absence, Steve Jobs today announced, "I hereby resign as CEO of Apple."

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know," Jobs wrote in his letter of resignation "to the Apple board of directors and the Apple community." "Unfortunately, that day has come.

"I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee," Jobs added. "As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple."

In a separate release, Apple noted that Cook was, in fact, named CEO, Jobs was elected chairman of the board and Cook was added to the company's board.

"Steve's extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company," said Art Levinson, chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple's board. "Steve has made countless contributions to Apple's success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple's immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as chairman of the board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration."

Since 2004, Jobs has battled pancreatic cancer, had a liver transplant and taken multiple leaves of absence from Apple, though he, himself, has released few details of his health struggles.

A 12-year-old girl in Gothenburg was struck by lightning twice while taking a shower during a thunderstorm on Wednesday evening.

After dinner 12-year-old Alice went downstairs in the basement to take a shower when her parents heard her scream.

Seconds prior to the child’s outburst two loud claps of thunder had suddenly cracked outside and the rain began to pour.

Alice had been struck by lightning in the arm but her parents did not immediately understand what had happened.

The child’s mother, Cecilia Svensson, immediately went downstairs and began to help wash her daughter’s hair when Alice screamed for the second timed.

“She screamed again. She was holding the metal shower hose while rinsing off,” Svensson, who at this point still did not understand what was happening, told local newspaper Göteborgstidningen (GT).

As we wrote earlier this afternoon, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay posted on his Twitter account that he was in Brett Favre's hometown, but the quarterback's agent says he has not heard of any interest from the Colts according to the Associated Press.

The 41-year-old Favre retired in the offseason after a 20-year career and lives in Hattiesburg. Irsay sent a tweet on Sunday saying "Brad, I'm in Hattiesburg ... is it right or left at the Firechief?"

Favre's longtime agent Bus Cook said he hadn't spoken with the quarterback in a few days, but the "last time I saw him he was on his tractor mowing the back forty."

Through a spokesman, Colts' general manager Chris Polian declined comment on Irsay's tweet.

but four made-for-TV movies that were rated highly enough to earn the

weekly TV series. After that lengthy
trial, you'd assume that the show would get solid ratings.
That wasn't the case. A lower
budget, silly scripts and a villain
who was featured way to often doomed the show to only 13 episodes.

Still fondly remembered (and featuring Dallas

star Roger Clemens acknowledge they made a critical error that ultimately doomed
their high-profile trial but asked a judge for another chance to convict the
pitching standout of lying about using performance-enhancing drugs.

The U.S. attorney’s office for the District of Columbia filed arguments
Friday disputing Clemens’ position that a second trial would violate his
constitutional protection against double jeopardy by making him face the same
charges twice. The filing is the prosecutors’ first public admission of fault in
the mistrial and first explanation of what went wrong.

They said it was an oversight that they showed jurors evidence that U.S.
District Judge Reggie Walton had ruled inadmissible—evidence that the
defendant’s teammate told his wife that Clemens had admitted using
performance-enhancing drugs.

This is a really good article(click the link below).
There is nothing that is written that says you should just get a job and stay there for 20-30 years and retire and everything is lovely. I know it feels like that's the way it is supposed to be, but isn't and it shouldn't.
I think you learn more and experience more from different situations in different areas of employment.
One thing the article missed was that job hoppers bring their experience from all that they have learned from all that they have done.

I am all for research and Volcanoes are important to the structure of the Earth, but with all the history and all the research, when a volcanologist is asked maybe not a simple question but a very important question like "When will this end?" or "When will this happen again?"
The answer should be a little better than "I don't know!"

At least when a physicist doesn't know an answer(and they usually don't) they at least have the courtesy to make one up and make it sound scientific.

Why would you say such a thing? Stephen Green, director of Christian Voice called this "a desperate cry for attention." But from what?
At least make a quote to some research that is studying such a claim.
Dan Brown may have been writing fiction with "The DaVinci Code", but he had at least three "mythical" sources for which a "fictional" story could take place.

There were at least a couple of good quotes in response, one from Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League,

"Jesus was certainly compassionate, but to say he was 'super-intelligent' is to compare the son of God to a successful game-show contestant."

I wasn't going to do anything with this story until I found out the story was written by retired Orlando Sentinel columnist Jerry Greene who is one of those cynical sports writers who used(I am going to use the past tense if he is insisting on using the title retired even though he is still writing) syndicate football picks every week and thought he was funny with his literal take on football teams(Calling the New York Jets the East Rutherford Jets, but never calling the Dallas Cowboys the Irving Cowboys which is ironic because East Rutherford is closer to New York than Irving is to Dallas).
So in other words there was the nothing the NFL or the Pro Bowl could do that was going to satisfy him.
So in case you missed it(and you probably did since the Grammys were on) here on some things the Pro Bowl did that were better(compared to the past)!
*By having the game during the bye week of The Super Bowl, I wasn't completely bored on a ordinary Sunday pondering whether to actually check out Golf, and possibly missing Baseball and dare I say NASCAR(NOOOOO!)!
*It gave ESPN a head start on Super Bowl hype and discussion. In the past what else would there be to talk about(because you can't just watch sports you have to talk about it) since the Super Bowl would have been the week before.
*There were more people in the stadium(which it seems has changed names 4 times in the last year!) for any Pro Bowl I've seen in a long time(and more than I've seen for a Dolphins game in a long time).
*It was a high scoring game that was close and went down to the last few series to determine the winner.
*Aaron Rodgers started the game!!!!!!!!!!

I know you can't teach a old dog new tricks and far be it for a simple blogger/podcaster to tell Jerry Greene how to write. But it is so easy to find something wrong with something especially since he had convinced himself he wasn't going to enjoy it anyway. Maybe enjoy yourself for once and in addition to his snarky style add something that is positive. Is it really that hard?
I imagine it probably is.

I know a lot of people are going to say there are bigger problems that need more attention(meaning money), but look back at history and one of the affects(or is it effects) of the "Space Race" is the innovation that the science provided just to make things work that later was used in the public sector(like the personal computer, was that important?).
Many of the problems that the nation faces really isn't solved by money(especially Government money), and if you take the grants and budget away from NASA and they rely on private donors, only the private donors will benefit from the science learned because they are going to want a stake in their investment.
I would rethink this if we are truly concerned about education and science in this country.

President Cristina Fernandez(babe #2 in politics, the Prime Minister of The Ukraine is #1) of Argentina in a speech to help promote pork farms in her country said that Pork is better than Viagra with what I hope will be a famous quote where she said she recently ate pork and "things went very well that weekend, so it could well be true."

Can you imagine if President Obama said something like that:

What a shocker! Now the only one in denial is Cardinals Manager Tony LaRussa who claims that he first knew about it was this morning when McGwire called him.
Now the other item to deal with is that even with the Steroids issue, McGwire is not a Hall of Famer.

NBC pulls plug on Jay Leno show's prime time experiment

This could be the end for NBC. This was not supposed to be about ratings this was about saving money instead of the cost of 5 hours of programming(mostly dramas).
It seems like everyone who wants NBC to fail on this was making noise(like CBS) and that freaked out some local NBC affiliates who threatened to air alternate programming.
NBC is in such a no win situation and so many ego's are now in play.
So now NBC's grand idea is to have Jay Leno on for 30 minutes(!?!), then the Tonight Show(which in some parts of the country in will be on at Midnight which is no longer tonight), and then Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
NBC does have the Olympics coming up and that could buy some time for programming in that time slot, but here is my award winning solution for NBC for the remainder of the TV season(appox. early September).
Cut your losses with Leno and instead of repeats of Heroes or Law and Order and please no more stupid News programs. In the 10pm(EST) slot play classic NBC shows from the Past(to remind us that NBC was once a great network).
Little House on the Prairie on Mondays, A-Team on Tuesdays, L.A. Law on Wednesday, Cheers and Seinfeld on Thursday and Bonanza on Friday.
It's just a thought and no worse than Jay Leno!

I love the first line of this article

Freed from his liberal base and moneyed donors, Sen. Chris Dodd can now cast himself as the honest broker in negotiations over a massive Wall Street regulation bill.

This is an interesting analysis for ABC News Jim Kuhnhenn, but I can't help but snicker when I read this. That somehow honesty and integrity can only occur when you are without a base or donor or therefore an agenda.

My guess is that a politician can leave politics, but the politics doesn't leave the Politician.

Wow I don't know what to say about this story. It seems that South Africa has come so far in a short time, but looks like it still has a ways to go.
